Warmer weather is arriving and if you’re like most, this means it’s time for some annual spring cleaning. Of course, if you have a bunion causing chronic pain and disrupting your daily life, surgery might be at the top of your list of things to do. It’s important, though, to follow another list—the instructions given to care for bunions after your operation. Follow these closely if you want to ensure the spring in your step returns as quickly as possible.

There are different types of bunion surgery, and your recovery time will depend on the procedure you undergo. Initially, you will need to keep the weight off your foot and rest as much as possible. Prop it up on some pillows to minimize swelling, kick back, and watch someone else clean out the closet! You can also apply ice, but take care not to get your bandages or sutures wet—these must be kept clean and dry (a good excuse to not be in charge of washing windows!). Anti-inflammatory medication will help to alleviate any pain, and we may prescribe antibiotics to keep the area infection-free. You will likely need to wear a special cast or boot to help protect your foot, which could be considered better than having to wear rubber gloves. After you get the go-ahead, physical therapy exercises can help to restore mobility and strength. When it’s time to turn in your fancy surgical boot for normal shoes, make sure that they have plenty of room in the toe box so that no pressure is placed on the joint—you don’t want the same problem reoccurring.

Once you follow all the instructions on your post-care list, you can go back to your list of spring cleaning chores. However, with any luck, others will have already done everything for you. See—there is a bright side to doctor-ordered down time!
